Twitter could be setting itself up for a big payday.

As it was mentioned on Twitter’s blog , the popular free social-networking and micro-blogging website made some changes to its Terms of Service.

Ad Space for Sale?

Advertising—In the Terms, we leave the door open for advertising. We’d like to keep our options open as we’ve said before.”

- Biz Stone, Co-founder and Creative Director of Twitter, Inc.

For a while, many poeple (myself, included) wondered how Twitter was going to make its money.  There were never any ads.  Never once have I been propositioned with free iPods, videogame consoles or computer systems if I just “click here,” “watch this,” or “shoot that.” But from these updated Terms of Service, things may be changing.  There’s a chance that we may start seeing advertisements from other companies, which could mean big bucks for Twitter.

Any business can make a free twitter account and post updates, but they would only be able to reach a small percentage of Twitter users.  Now imagine having your company’s name plastered across the tope of every user’s Twitter feed.  You’re talking about an entirely differently level of reach and exposure. And if Twitter’s popularity continues to rise, the allure of its ad space could help the site rake in some major dollars.

Corporate-User Tools

Biz Stone says that the Twitter is considering paid corporate tools such as an “Analytics Dashboard,” which would help companies monitor Tweets about their business, or verified corporate Twitter accounts.

With these types of services set in place, questions surrounding Twitter’s earning power may shift from “How does Twitter make any money?” to “What do I need to do to start making as much money as Twitter?”
