I don’t know if that title will get me anywhere…but I was trying to be a bit funny.
I was actually really stoked the other day when I discovered that my Flickr Pro account now includes the ability to upload 90 second videos. It was so well timed for me. I had been looking for a way to share very short videos (typically 30 to 60 seconds) of my little daughter with my family and friends spread around the world.
Techcrunch liked it too. Watch the little “Shel Israel Puppet” it is pretty strange.
The first order of business for me was that I could control access to the videos. I didn’t wanna just put up videos of my daughter and let just anyone view them. So, I needed something that gave me control. I thought about Youtube – they do give you the ability to keep your video private. I also checked out a few other options.
What bummed me out and made me so happy to find the ability to put them on Flickr, was that I didn’t wanna go and create another profile on another network (is anyone else suffering from Social Network Profile fatigue??). I also didn’t want to make my family go to multiple sites – go to this one for pictures, and oh, you have to go to this other one for the video. No thanks!! Not to mention the need to upload new address books etc.
I am now sharing videos with my family via the new Flickr video that became automatically part of my pro-account.
I guesss some Flickr users are not so impressed about this new feature. They feel that it slurries the “authentic” nature of Flickr. With such groups as; We Say No To Videos On Flickr. I can see their argument on one level, but I think it will never become Youtube and I don’t think that that is the intention. The most important thing is that it does not slow the site down and it does not take resources away from improving the site and photo element in any discernible way.
What it does do is allow people to keep, share and control access to the images and videos that they find important. Sometimes consolidation is a good thing.
I will be using this service with much happiness and glee!!
