BL Ochman Hearts My ooVoo Day

by Chris Abraham on February 18, 2008 · 2 comments

I was teasing BL that “all I ever do,” online, “I do it for her.” And it is true! I was totally trying to make My ooVoo Day appealing enough and cool enough for her… and it worked! ooVoo is our client through crayon LLC, our direct client. Even so, we here at AHLLC have been working our ooVoos off for ooVoo in general and My ooVoo Day in particular. You can see that I was DC man on the spot last week in support of Bob Garfield. In fact, you can see a short video of Bob in the office he used over at MSHC Partners, a longer video of part of Bob Garfield’s My ooVoo Day get-together, and some candid shots taken with my cool Nokia n95. Well, back to BL… she likes it! BL Ochman likes it! Check this out, excerpted from her blog: Oovoo and Other Video Call Sites Are Big Fun – Try Them!

Oovoo and Other Video Call Sites Are Big Fun – Try Them!

Once a few technical kinks are out of Oovoo, it’ll be hard to convince most people to travel for business. That’s because you can video conference – gratis – with up to six people; exchange files, text message during the call, and lots more. And rumor has it that Oovoo will soon go mobile.

I have had video conversations on Oovoo this week with old and new friends including Susan Reynolds, Connie Reece, Steve Hall, Chris Brogan, Bob Garfield, Yang-Mai Ooi and many more. Depending on how good one’s lighting is, one looks great or ghoulish. Technical issues have mostly to do with sound, including echoes and some feedback, but I’m sure they will be worked out soon.

You can bet that there’ll be a market for good lighting for people participating in online video conferencing like Oovoo, Seesmic and Skype. If you have devised a great lighting set-up please let me know. I have only managed to light one half of my face so far.

All you need to participate in Oovoo and its various competitors is a Mac with a built-in camera, or a webcam and a headset. The downside to all is that one must download software. That’s a problem for many would-be corporate participants, who have to deal with firewalls on corporate servers. But that problem is surmountable as the technology becomes more accepted and widespread, and imperfections in sound and image are ironed out.

You can still sign up to take part in the My Oovoo Day conversation. That’s the clever launch created by Crayon.

OK, and here’s the stuff I, Chris Abraham, did in support of My ooVoo Day, on behalf of crayon and Bob Garfield:

I got to host On the Media’s Bob Garfield and represent crayon LLC and ooVoo today during My ooVoo Day today at the offices of MSHC Partners thanks to the kindness and generosity of Michael Bassik. The entire day went swimmingly and many a fine feathered friend ooVoo’d in to say hello and to participate. Very cool. You’ll see my cute-as-sin x61 ThinkPad with my cool wee notebook webcam by CREATIVE. Note the Caribou Coffee cup — there are still alternatives to Starbucks in this town, Washington, DC.

The Happy My ooVoo People

Scott Monty, BL Ochman, Mark Harrison, Christina Greene, and Jonathan Trenn, etc, are all lined up for mirth and happiness! Check out the sweet notie with the cool cammie and the hip offie! We’re attached via a brightly-colored lannie.

Bob Garfield's Got a Posse

Here’s On the Media’s Bob Garfield on My ooVoo Day as he engages with 5 of his newest best friends forever (BFFs). You don’t have any more time to hang out with Bob but you do still have a couple weeks to connect with My ooVoo Day. Check it out!

A Short Video of Bob Garfield on My ooVoo Day

Here’s a short clip of today’s My ooVoo Day with Bob Garfield that I grabbed for a few seconds using my Nokia n95 8GB — it is a little choppy on video because I have too much crap loaded on the phone. So, here’s a little bit of what you missed so please check it out. Even in the few second here, Bob Garfield is witty, smart, insightful, and brilliant! Anyway, you could have very well been part of this love and repartee.

A webcam transmits an image of a talking head. Does that add anything to the presentation? I’ve attended online web conferences where the presenters participate by voice only. It works for me, but then I love public radio talk, too.
