The war between the Target and the blogosphere was officially started with this arrogant sound bite, “Unfortunately we are unable to respond to your inquiry because Target does not participate with nontraditional media outlets.” Very foolish of you, Target, since you used to have a metric buttload of online, blogger, and hipster cred. NYT- Target to the blogosphere: you’re irrelevant. — What’s up with “trendy” discount retailer Target? When a blogger wrote to complain about a new advertising campaign that depicted a woman splayed across a big target pattern — the store’s emblem — with the bull’s-eye at her crotch Target offered this e-mail, um, “response”: Target offered an e-mail response: “Unfortunately we are unable to respond to your inquiry because Target does not participate with nontraditional media outlets.” (Meow.) To which I say, “Don’t piss off the bloggers, Target. It will be the biggest mistake of your life.” (NYT) (Via Frager Factor)
From Shaping Youth:
The Flickr photographer, Bennett says this billboard is in Times Square, NYC, about 20? x 20?. I’m waiting for a corporate callback with an explanation from a ‘Target Team member.’ Meanwhile, the universal issue is sexualized ad slop, and how we need to just freakin’ STOP it.

It’s quite shocking how many companies don’t have people in PR who will tell them what an incredibly Bad idea that is. I’m really surprised at this particular brand - as has been written all around the bsphere they have this image as being the hip department store and they’re on their way to killing it with one dumb statement.
Yeah, this is a really bad move on Target’s part. I expect to see this story really take off this week with some kind of formal response from Target by Friday.
Agreed.
