Sometimes something happens that is like a gift from God. In this case, it was a very complimentary post from Dan Hull over at our sibling corporate blog, What About Client? entitled, Our Wunderkind in Berlin — referring to me. What happened? I realized, after making a couple self-glorifying posts onto my two blogs, that Dan’s post wasn’t simply celebratory, it was also cautionary:
‘Learn a lot, grow a lot, get famous and make money. You have our permission. As long as you “serve somebody”, like the man from Hibbing said, it’s your world. To keep level, read T.S. Eliot, some Flaubert and maybe The Upanishads. But watch a little, too.’ — Dan Hull
As long as you serve somebody. Service is so important and I always forget to do it daily as a habit and a way of life.
In little ways, like passing a post like this forward to all of the people I admire, love, trust, and can easily write a post at least as wonderful as anything said about yours truly. I used to spend hours writing testimonials on LinkedIn and Friendster for friends and colleagues. I also used to write blog posts about the products, services, colleagues, and clients whom I admired.
But time is finite and it is easy to forget about friends, family, community, and my world when I am incredibly busy learning a lot, growing a lot, getting famous, and making money.
They say that actions sown into the world come back 7-times: curses and hurt as well as generosity and service. So, I know I am a lot premature for Thanksgiving and all that, but since I am living in Berlin, I am all screwed up on my American holidays.
So, I aspire and commit myself and my company to service and gift-giving in the coming year in ways even more profound than merely in our online messaging.
Thank you, Dan, for the humbling reminder that while learning a lot, growing a lot, getting famous, and making money sound like a pretty awesome thing to spend all of my time pursuing, it also seems pretty meaningless, alone and in a “my world” of one.
Cheers, mate, and I hope to see you in Charleston.

Our Wunderkind in Berlin
Being a Very-Minor-Almost-Imperceptible-Celebrity, I sometimes get to hang out with Very-Major-Totally-Obvious-Celebrities…
Chris Abraham, in a post at Because the Medium is the Message
Learn a lot, grow a lot, get famous and make money. You have our permission. As long as you “serve somebody”, like the man from Hibbing said, it’s your world. To keep level, read T.S. Eliot, some Flaubert and maybe The Upanishads. But watch a little, too. Watch this guy: WAC?’s talented DC friend and IT mentor Chris Abraham of internet experts Abraham & Harrison kept his old life in America and just started a new one in Berlin. Chris is a rising star in public relations blogging, new marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO). He amazes me.
Chris, well under 40, is no geek, and someone should run him for office the minute he turns too rich. The last time I saw Chris, in Monterey, California, he introduced me to a talented fellow in NYC we should all watch named Jonathan Swerdloff. And then Chris just happened to invite me to dinner along with a former Fortune 100 company GC-turned-CEO an entire generation older (okay, my age) who I had been wanting to get together with for four (4) years.* Chris is creative, smart, marketing oriented–and charming. You can follow Chris in Berlin at this blog or his other blog. Watch him.
*This annoyed me. WAC? has uber-thick skin. But Chris is better at my job than I am–and he doesn’t even have my job.
