Seems as if Verizon forgot what type of business it is in.
The New York Times reported earlier today that Verizon had reversed course on not allowing Naral, the (National Abortions Rights Action League) to send out text messages to is supporters. From what I can gather, it was the issue as a whole - abortion - and not the group’s particular stance that caused Verizon to initially not allow Naral to communicate to its members - members who had taken the time to opt-in to Naral’s outreach program.
This is about as stupid as you can get. First of all, political groups have been using moblie text outreach for a few years now, so it’s not as if the concept is brand new. Secondly, there have been conferences on the use of mobile technology in politics. I wouldn’t be surprised if Verizon was a sponsor for one of them. Third, all of the other carriers - leaving Verizon out there by themselves. And lastly, they sure as hell picked a controversial topic to make this decision. It’s likely to piss off both sides.
Shows me the various related deparments in Verizon need to have an important meeting to discuss what the hell they are doing.
