So over the past several months I have read articles talking about the revolutionary new pieces of technology - Joost and Veoh TV.
Okay so they both sound interesting and offer potentially new avenues for the cable world. As almost all of know and recognize (except maybe the Cable companies) it is all about TV on demand. That is TV on my schedule when I want it, what episode or show I want on completely instantaneous demand (please let me know if you think I am totally off my rocker … but personally that is when I will become a TV watcher).
Yes, Tivo and DVR’s offer somethig close to this. But, you have a limited hard-drive space, the show has to have been previously recorded (aka. played on a regular channel at a preset time that you have set your DVR to record). In otherwords still limited and archaic by “customer choice” standards - at least for digitial technology.
So, along come Joost and Veoh TV!
Lets start with Joost because it is my favorite - and I think it offers the biggest potential. Unfortunately I no longer have the original article that alerted me to Joost’s existence. But, I did find this recent review of Joost by Frantic Industries. They actually explain the software and business concept which was thought up by those brilliant guys that created Skype.
Joost is a streaming P2P platform for television. It brings you TV or near-TV quality content in an application that uses P2P protocols to fetch the content, but it’s not really transparent to the user, who simply has to start using it and needs not worry about how it does its thing. The app is based on Mozilla’s XULRunner engine, which basically means it’s cross-platform. It’s ad-funded, and from what I understand you won’t be able to simply share content on Joost like you can on YouTube. It’s TV in the old fashioned sense of the word - they give you content, you watch it; only on internet. It makes up for this with the quality of the content and the features of the software.
It is the P2P aspect that makes it interesting and powerful - it is using computing power that is already out there to create the ability to easily and quickly stream and download movies to your computer. In otherwords it cuts out the delay time caused by waiting to download your favorite movies. The other big thing is this whole venture is funded through ads. Yes, another product driven by our insatiable desire to consume. Which, hey TV companies like showing ads.
The potential is huge - now all we need are the big boys to jump on and open up their catalogues so that people can stream and watch any and every show ever made for TV. Plus, as the review points out, the possibilities for big distribution for the little independent producers at negligible cost exists. This, is cool!
Then from an advertisers point of view you continue to be able to gain space to target audiences based on the demographics of the consumer. Over and over again.
Tomorrow I will talk about Veoh TV.
