Opening up the API was HUGE for Facebook. It will really serve to make them
an even larger internet hub than they already are. Its pretty much the closest thing they can do to full on open-sourse, but still leaves a higher profit and visibility motive to widget creators. For updates on new apps, check out http://www.allfacebook.com

I also think that maybe Facebook got a little bit of a poke from the way that Twitter opened up their API so thoroughly, with impressive results.
