The obvious advantages of a remote working are limitless. To name a few clichés: working in pajamas, working at the beach, working in my bath tub. However, the virtual team is the real base to any company which chooses to have a staff that is working from numerous different cities, states, and countries at a time. One of the most important questions becomes, “How do you form a virtual team that will act as a group in the interest of this company?”

I recently stumbled across a new ChangeThis Manifesto entitled “When You Absolutely, Positively Should NOT Use Email: A Civilized List”. It seems strikingly relevant to a virtual company, where nearly ALL communication is done via email. Though I am not sure the “time of day” rules apply, as we cover numerous timezones - it is certainly worth a read through.

In this morning’s Wall Street Journal there is an article, Whole Foods Is Hot, Wild Oats a Dud — So Said ‘Rahodeb,’ about how John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, allegedly manipulated stock prices by doing stealth marketing as Rabodeb in the Yahoo! stock market group forums. If this is true, John Mackey coerced and manipulated perception in a big way in order to potentially harm Wild Oats Markets and make it easier for Whole Foods to eventually acquire OATS at a reduced rate. This is not conversation marketing, this is market manipulation.

So, how do you deal with the quirks of having a virtual company. There are so many hidden problems and out front benefits. Some people say that it would never work - that you need the culture of the company that comes out of the face to face interactions of employee’s. i think this point alone has standing - there is always something gained from human interaction. But, it doesn’t have to be limited to work - perhaps we can have lives out side of work. Perhaps we our lives can somewhat dictate our work habits rather then the other way round.
